Alchi is one of the larger villages in Lower Ladakh and is located on the southern bank of the River Indus at an altitude of 3,250 metres. Consisting of four separate hamlets, the village contains numerous historic monuments of different ages and in various states of repair. The oldest and most famous is a monastic compound, which today lies under the jurisdiction of Likir monastery. It is this complex which the term ‘Alchi monastery’ refers to.
