The site of Tholing is situated in the West of today's Tibet. Tholing was founded in the year 996 by Yeshe-Ö, the king of Guge. For several centuries the village represented the centre of Tibetan Buddhism in the kingdom of Guge. In the 15th century the royal residence was transferred to Tsaparang, which is in 25km distance from Tholing.
