During the 15th century Tsaparang replaced Tholing as the seat of the kings of the Guge kingdom. The newly established royal residence was located in close distance to Tholing, about 25km far away. During the following centuries many temples were build around the place, of which many become victims of the Chinese Cultural Revolution. Nonetheless parts of Tsaparang are preserved until today, providing evidence of the rich cultural history of the place.
